There are some roads where you can see the panoramic views of the Winds from a distance of, say, several miles. >possible to still great some panoramic views of the Winds from the nearest roads? Any earlier and we can encounter snowy trails any later and we could get caught in an early snowstorm. When we do pack trips into the higher elevations in the Winds, we try to do during the middle or end of August. But you can access many trailheads by car and hike in on showshoes. There will be a lot of snow on the trails in the Winds well into July, especially at higher elevations. >I have also heard that the trails will be inaccessible until early July due to snow - does this mean most of the area will be snow covered until then? Over the years, I ridden for weeks on horseback trips into those mountains, and my impression is that to get great pictures you'd either have to hike or ride in. You can look online at sites for Bridger Wilderness Area (west side of the Winds) and Pogo Agie and Fitzpatrick Wilderness Areas (east side of Winds). There's not even a paved road that crosses the Winds - you have to go around them. The Winds are about 100 miles long, contain 1,300 lakes, and most of the area is in designated wilderness area - so no vehicles allowed. And lakes, not being visible like mountain peaks, would be almost impossible from a car, with a few exceptions. You could get photos from a road at quite some distance, but not close up. >Also is it difficult to access the best vistas for the Wind River Range by car? I think you could find some great spots to hike to after just a day of scouting, but you'll only have time to scout a small portion of the entire range. The Winds, though, are much longer than the Tetons, and you can approach them from either the west or east side. But I would imagine you could take a lot of pictures of the Tetons from a lot of good vantage points (that you could drive to) in two days, especially if you had a full day to scout out the places ahead of time. >Does that sound like an adequate amount of time to you?Ī little hard for me to answer, as I don't do photography.
